Compared with a normal website or a social platform:
| | A normal site / platform | Alternet |
|---|---|---|
| Account needed | Yes, usually | No. Your identity is a key on your own machine |
| Someone hosts it | A company, for a fee or for your data | You, or any friend who keeps a copy |
| If the host goes away | The site is gone | Any replica keeps serving it |
| Is the copy genuine? | You trust the server | Every copy is checked against the owner's signature |
| Can it be altered quietly? | Yes | No. A changed byte is rejected |
| Works without internet | No | Yes, over a LAN, hotspot, file transfer, or radio carriers |
| Who can take it down | The host, a regulator, a payment provider | Only people who hold a copy and choose to drop it |
Run alternet tour: it publishes a site, copies it, rejects a tampered copy, then shows the site
surviving its publisher going offline. It takes about a minute and needs no network.
It is not anonymous, and it does not replace the web. It is plain text sites you can own, verify
and keep alive without asking anyone. Honest limits are in about.md.
